Week 36 - Who I Am

I think this is a great song.  It’s very catchy and Ben Fuller has a great voice.  But I think it’s important to first highlight his walk of life that led him to the foot of the cross.

Fuller talks about the generations of hurt in his family and him struggling with certain aspects of life.  That his life on the outside seemed like a dream come true.  But his life on the inside was chaotic and messed up.

He said he had promiscuous relationships with women and eventually turned to cocaine and alcohol at a young age.  In fact, he claims that he readily did drugs for about 15 years.  In 2017, he lost a dear friend to a heroine overdose which caused his outlook on life to shift towards being sober.

In 2018, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career as a country singer.  But when a family he is close to invited him to church in Franklin, Tennessee where he heard Chris McClarney and Jon Reddick leading worship and singing “God, Turn it Around.”

Fuller said that it was all he could do to not just fall on his knees – he knew that he would be singing Christian music for the rest of his life.  He fell face-first into a new-found relationship with Jesus and began writing music to share how God turned his life around.

Today, Fuller is sober and shares his testimony in his music … the testimony that God filled his life with hope, mercy, and grace.  Fuller shared that all he wants to do now is share his story with the world and all who are ready to listen to it.  And maybe the Holy Spirit – through his testimony – will sink into more people’s hearts and grow the Kingdom of God.

The lyrics to this song are below:

Verse 1:
“I stand in front of the mirror, but I don't like who's looking back at me.  Wish I could see things clearer, like who I'm supposed to be.  In every trial, lift me higher.  Through the fire, hold me tighter.  Remind me again that I was made for more.”

Chorus:
“Who I am, in the eyes of the Father.  Who I am, His love set free.  Who I was, I left at the altar.  I am Yours Lord, I believe.  It's who I am; I'm a child of the most-high God and the most-high God's for me.  It's who I am; I'm a child of the most-high God and the most-high God's for me.”

Verse 2:
“Everything has been changing, You haven't left a stone unturned.  Anything I've been facing, I'll keep standing on Your Word.  In the water, take me under.  Fill my lungs to speak Your wonder.  You brought me out of the darkness, I was made for more.”

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge:
“You gave up everything, for me to have everything.  For all of eternity, a song in my lungs to sing.  You gave up everything, for me to have everything.  For all of eternity, a song in my lungs to sing.”

(Repeat Chorus)

Knowing Fuller’s background makes this song an even bigger faithful witness to God’s amazing grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness.

God puts His name on us and claims us as His beloved children.  If we continue to reject His claim over us, then we remain unsaved and therefore condemned.  Once we realize that Jesus Christ – the true Son of God – truly gave up everything to win us to Himself, then we are truly saved.

Jesus gave up His throne in heaven to become one of us.  He suffered excruciating agony and gave up His life for us, and in our place.

Once we believe in Him – and that He has done these things to win salvation for us – then we can be confident that we will get to sing His song for all of eternity with Him in heaven.

Soli Deo Gloria!
